GUWAHATI, Assam. The Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) and its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) won 58 seats out of total 60 seats in the local polls for Guwahati Municipal Corporations (GMC).

The election for Guwahati civic body was held after 9 long years, in which BJP won 52 seats and its ally AGP was ahead in 6 seats. The Congress party, which secured a victory in the election held in 2013, failed to secure even a single seat this time. While, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Assam Jatiya Party (AJP) secured one seat each. Earlier, BJP also managed to win 759 wards out of 977 in the municipal board elections held last month.

This time around, the number of wards was increased, which was 31 in the 2013 elections. Also, 50 per cent of seats were reserved for women, and the voting percentage in the Friday’s GMC election stood at 52.80%.
