KSWMP, IFEC inks pact to conduct fire safety audit at SWM facilities

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Kerala: Intending to improve the fire safety at the Solid Waste Management (SWM) facilities in Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), the Kerala Solid Waste Management Project (KSWMP) has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with International Fire Engineering Consultants (IFEC) to audit the existing safety mechanisms.  

Divya S Iyer, Project Director, KSWMP, and C Arunagiri, Chief Executive Consultant, IFEC, inked the MoU won on behalf of their respective organisations for the first phase of the fire safety assessment exercise at the solid waste management facilities. In the first phase, a fire safety audit will be conducted on 25 legacy waste dumpsites, 64 waste disposal centres in the gram panchayat, and 74 Material Collection Facilities (MCF) in urban local bodies.

Earlier, a review meeting was held between Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and World Bank officials as the international banking firm is supporting the KSWMP. During the review meeting, it was decided to evaluate the safeguards to identify and do away with the potential fire risk at the waste management facilities. Following the completion of the audit recommended safety precautions will be fully complied with along with the existing fire safety laws and guidelines.
