KOCHI: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) directed the Kerala State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) to initiate proceedings against the Secretary of the Kochi Municipal Corporation for mishandling waste in Brahmapuram Plant. The civic body will also be fined with an amount of Rs 13.3 crores for disregarding Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. In July 2020, NGT ordered that KSPCB is responsible for implementing the order and initiate the proceedings as well as recovering the compensation amount, failing which KSPCB chairman and member secretary will be held liable for the same.
KSPCB has also filed the complaint in the district magistrate court. The civic body has discontinued the plant but has continued dumping garbage on the existing legacy waste.
