KOCHI: Failure of the Kochi Municipal Corporation’s (KMC) Bhahmapuram facility to comply with the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 led the Kerala State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) to slap an environment compensation of Rs 10.05 crore.
The facility was assessed from April 9, 2019 to October-end by officials from the KSPCB and the State Level Monitoring Committee (SLMC). A report by the officials regarding the performance of the facility will be submitted before the National Green Tribunal (NGT) soon.
The corporation will be allowed to present its views at the meeting of the committee scheduled for November 8. The KSPCB blamed the civic body and cited their failure to make improvements and appropriately rectify short comings for the past nine years. The Bhamapuram dump site has been functioning without authorisation of the State PCB as per the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016.
The environment compensation imposed on KMC will comprise of capital cost, operation cost, maintenance charges and environment externalities by considering as the average waste generation as 365.19 tonnes on daily basis.
