KOLKATA, West Bengal: Kolkata metropolitan city records its hottest night on June 8, 2023, in the last 50 years for which the record has been maintained claims the India Meteorological Department (IMD). GK Das, Head of the Weather Section in IMD Kolkata, informed the reporter that on June 8, the nighttime temperature reached to 31.2 degrees Celsius.

Senior IMD officials confirmed this development and said that both nighttime and daytime temperature has been increasing consistently over the last few years and in over all the months.

On June 13, the actual temperature of Kolkata increased to 39 degrees Celsius thanks to high clouds and relative humidity, reported Accuweather, a private weather monitoring agency.

Though the arrival of the monsoon in north Bengal has given a bit of relief to the citizens of Kolkata, still some districts of West Bengal are experiencing repeated spells of heatwave. Just before the arrival of the monsoon, north Bengal and some areas of Sikkim were experiencing extreme temperature rise with maximum temperature reaching 40 degrees Celsius in Bagdogra, Darjeeling.

Special Bulletin issued by IMD showed that seven districts in West Bengal, including Purbo (East) Bardhaman, Paschim (West) Bardhaman, Bankura, Paschim (West) Midnapur, Jhargram, Birbhum and Purulia, are amongst the districts which are expected to experience heatwave spells in the coming week. Special Bulletin released by IMD predicted that nearly 26 districts out of a total of 766 in the country will reel under high-temperature.
