KOCHI: Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has decided to provide free parking for bicycles with the proper facility of secure locking mechanism. KMRL will install 22 such stands at various stations for metro commuters. According to KMRL officials, the purpose behind the new initiative is to improve last mile connectivity and encouraging people to use bicycles to reduce emissions. Commuters can park up to six cycles at a time. The new project implementation will bring city commuters as well as city tourists together to promote eco-friendly transportation system, he added.
Metro commuters can now park their bicycles at the designated locations safely before the travel, an official said.
Earlier in 2017, the KMRL started a public bicycle-sharing programme. As part of the programme, cycles were installed at major locations of Kochi. Tourists could use the paid facility for visiting Fort Kochi and nearby areas. However, the programme did not get good response.
