Kerala recorded more than 50% of COVID-19 cases in India: Govt

NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, on Tuesday, August 10, reviewed the COVID-19 situation in the country and said that Kerala accounts for 51.51 per cent of the total COVID-19 cases recorded in the past seven days. The Ministry also said that Kerala and Tamil Nadu are one of the nine states which are showing a rising trend in COVID-19 cases over the last two weeks.

The health ministry also said in the statement that 44 districts in almost 11 states and union territories are reporting positivity rate of more than 10 per cent. Dr S K Singh, Director, National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), said that a central team was sent to Kerala to oversee the proper implementation of ‘test-track-treat’ technique. The team is also responsible for the surveillance of containment zones with the help of contact tracing and to analyse the infrastructure of hospitals and progress of vaccination.

According to the Centre, the reproduction number, which denotes the spread of COVID-19 infection, was more than one in five states namely Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The Centre also said that the Delta Plus variant of SARS-CoV-2 has been found in 86 samples in the country, among which 34 are from Maharashtra.
