NEW DELHI: Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) Earth Science, Government of India, chaired a meeting regarding the preparations of “International Coastal Cleanup Day 2022”. On this occasion, 75 beaches will be cleaned in 75 days under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

The “International Coastal Cleanup Day 2022”, which is observed on the third Saturday of September of every year. This year the annual event coincides with ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’, the 75th year of India’s Independence. On this occasion, a coastal cleanliness drive will be organised under which 75 beaches of the country will be cleaned in 75 days. The clean-up drive will begin on July 3, and will end on the “International Coastal Cleanup Day 2022”.

The massive participation of people this year makes it a first-of-its-kind, longest-running coastal cleanup campaign. Local-level participation is essential to convey the message of “Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar” for the prosperity of the beaches and that of the country as a whole. The central minister also recommended other non-coastal regions to work out their local level plans to disseminate the message to all.

Jitendra Singh also reviewed the logo ad line for the day and other thematic aspects. The Cleanup drive will begin on July 3, with the release of a brochure and media interaction. Under the cleanliness drive, the government aims to remove 1,500 tonnes of garbage from the sea coast.

In the review meeting, the Director-General of the Indian Coast Guard, senior officials of the Ministry of Earth Science and representatives of other organisations were also present.
