KOCHI: Heavy rains lashed the streets in Kochi on Monday, October 21. Many major roads like MG Road, Ernakulam North and Menaka waterlogged causing traffic jams. Many shopkeepers kept their shops closed due to inundation.

Due to flooding of the railway tracks near the Ernakulam Junction Railway station, railway officials announced the cancellation of six passenger trains. The Venad Express train was diverted through local Ernakulam Town station. Also, as per the officials, a minor landslide occurred between Vaikom and Piravom Road. Incessant rains also affected polling in six polling booths, however the polling process resumed soon.

Three relief camps have been set up in the district – two in Kanayannur taluk and one in Kochi taluk. Various areas of west Kochi like Chullickal, Palluruthy and Thoppumpady were affected majorly.

According to the reports by India Meteorological Department (IMD), areas near Kochi airport received heavy rainfall nearly 160.4 mm on October 21st morning. The department has kept the district on an orange alert in lieu of the situation.
