NEW DELHI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning regarding an impending severe heatwave set to sweep through Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana in the forthcoming days.
Shivender Singh, a scientist affiliated with the IMD, stated that temperatures are anticipated to soar to staggering heights, with the mercury potentially peaking between 44 to 46 degrees Celsius. Singh emphasisied on the likelihood of a notable temperature surge by approximately four degrees Celsius over the course of the next four to five days, attributed to predominantly dry weather conditions and clear skies. The imminent heatwave is forecasted to reach its peak between May 16 and 18, 2024.
Specifically, Chandigarh and certain areas of southern Haryana and Punjab are expected to bear the brunt, with temperatures skyrocketing to 44-46 degrees Celsius during this period.
Additionally, the IMD’s projections indicate that temperatures across the northern regions of Haryana and Punjab, encompassing Chandigarh, are poised to fluctuate between 41 to 44 degrees Celsius. Consequently, the heightened temperatures are anticipated to instigate heatwave conditions throughout Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh from May 16 to 18, prompting residents to brace themselves for the scorching weather ahead.
