NEW DELHI: The Union cabinet has approved the proposal to regularise 1,728 unauthorised colonies of Delhi. The move will benefit the estimated 40 lakh inhabitants of these colonies as it relieves them from income tax liability and further aids would be provided to fund for the registration of new properties. The bill confers and recognises ownership rights to the residents of the 1,728 unauthorised colonies which are spread over 175 square kilometers in the national capital.

Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister of Delhi, has announced that the revenue department would be setting up special camps in illegal colonies to register the properties as soon as the Centre issues a notification

The rights to the property will be awarded on the basis of the payment of a nominal fee which would be set with respect to the plot size, the government said in a statement. The revenue department will reportedly have to register about 18 lakh properties once the regularisation notification is issued, based on the electricity connections in the identified illegal colonies.
