GUWAHATI, Assam: The Indian Institute of Technology – Guwahati (IIT-G) will establish the ICMR – DHR Centre of Excellence in the state to promote innovation in biomedical and diagnostic devices and their commercialisation.

The goal is to provide basic healthcare facilities to the communities residing in the remote regions of Assam.

Until now, Centres of Excellence are located on the premises of the Centre of Nanotechnology and Jyoti and Bhupat Mehta School of Health Sciences and Technology, IIT Guwahati.

As per the official statement, the effort is in line with the goals of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which aims to bring together academics, researchers, doctors, entrepreneurs and students from various departments, aiming to facilitate research and innovation in the healthcare sector.

The centre aims to detect biomarkers with the help of microfluidic and semiconductor nano biosensors to diagnose non-communicable diseases (NCD) such as kidney disorders, post-diabetic complications, malfunctioning liver or pancreas, cardiac illness and urinary tract. Apart from that, it also aims to develop three products in the healthcare sector, which can be scaled as commercial products to provide an indigenous alternative to healthcare devices like auto-analysers and semi-auto analysers, which are currently imported from outside.

The initiative is jointly led by the Department of Chemistry, Bioscience and Bioengineering, Electric Engineering, Design and Mathematics.
