NEW DELHI: The researchers at Indian Institute of Technology – Delhi (IIT-D) have generated clean and cheap hydrogen fuel from water. Increasing rise in the energy demand and the necessity to curb greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have encouraged the researchers to look for cleaner alternatives for fuel.
The study, funded by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) Energy Centre, helped the researchers to split water with the process of Sulphur-Iodine Thermochemical Hydrogen Cycle to generate cheaper and clean hydrogen fuel for industrial consumption. The researchers in the study said that hydrogen gas is a viable substitute of fossil fuels which can help to mitigate the emissions.
Sreedevi Upadhyayula, Department of Chemical Engineering, said that there is an increasing need to switch over to renewable energy sources such as water. The thermos-chemical hydrogen cycle for splitting water gives a practical means of generating hydrogen as a fuel and also oxygen as a by-product. She added that this can be considered a viable method of producing hydrogen on a large scale in the near future.
