IGI to go plastic free

NEW DELHI: The Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport is all set to dupe disposable plastic waste and turn itself into India’s first plastic free airport by December 2019. The new campaign to decline the use of disposable single use plastic and make airports plastic free is a large campaign started by Delhi International Airport Ltd. (DIAL) to eliminate the use of disposable plastic in all airports of India. This move is expected to decrease the heaps of plastic waste generated daily.

The single use plastic items that will be put at bay are plastic that are mainly given along with supplies, bags that passengers use to secure their luggage and plates, cups and spoons that you get when you purchase food. The majority of plastic comes from stirrers and straws, which are extremely harmful.

With this new initiative, the IGI airport will turn into eco-friendlier place. In place of plastic the airport will give its push to use of paper and wood based materials that are not harmful to the environment. In addition to that, the materials used will be compostable material.

In order to proper implement this plan, DIAL will also employ a special force solely dedicated to this task and to make sure that the waste is being treated properly. The IGI airport is being seen as the testing ground for this campaign by DIAL. If successful, then DIAL will implement the same rules to other airports as well.
