HYDERABAD, Telangana: The municipal corporation of Hyderabad is about to expand significantly, as the state government is preparing to merge seven adjacent municipal corporations and 30 municipalities with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). Following the merger, the entity will be known as the Hyderabad Greater City Corporation (HGCC).
Putting the scale of the new civic body into context, the new organisation will cover an area of 8,000 square kilometers, which is significantly larger than the current 650 square kilometers covered by the GHMC. The new civic body will surpass the size of the city’s urban development authority, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), which currently covers an area of 7,257 square kilometers under its jurisdiction.
The adjoining municipal corporations that will be merged include Nizampet, Boduppal, Meerpet, Jillelguda, Bandlaguda Jagir, Badangpet, Peerzadiguda, and Jawaharnagar. Apart from these municipal corporations, 30 municipalities located on the city outskirts will also be merged with the GHMC.
