HYDERABAD: Hyderabad has the maximum number of vertical gardens in India, stated Arvind Kumar, Special Chief Secretary, Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Department.

Keeping in mind the shrinking urban spaces, the MA&UD department took up the initiative to maximize the vertical garden sprawls. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation announced the development of vertical gardens on 31 pillars of nine flyovers earlier this year.

The initiative was taken up in an attempt to control pollution and add aesthetic value to the city. The MA&UD department has taken up several such initiatives such as building walking tracks along the Shaikpet Flyover and near the Kamineni Hospital, LB Nagar.

Sonali Srikanth, Founder, Fiora Designs LLP, elaborated that vertical gardening allows you to grow a large number of plants without taking away any floor space. Talking to the Indian Express, Srikanth stated that the green walls are easier to maintain if the right plants are selected. Hyderabad took care of the green wall by pre-installing a drip irrigation system.
