DHARAMSHALA: Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district receives its first earthquake alarm system. The new seismic sensing technology was developed by the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing in collaboration with the Central University of Himachal Pradesh (CUHP).
The sensor calculates the total electron content anomaly (TEC) in the earth which will trigger an alarm when the content rises above the standard value, is accompanied by 2 navigation satellite systems (GNSS) at Nurpur and Jiya in Kangra district. All three stations would be commissioned to predict the possibility of a seismic activity in the region.
Himachal faced 15 earthquakes between August 2011 and July 2013 and the new sensing technology will be implemented to make the region more resilient against the recurring natural calamity.
Kangra district has been classified in the zone 5 in terms of seismic vulnerability, which is the highest vulnerability to earthquakes. The situation is even more alarming as Kangra districts houses more than 5 Lakh buildings, a number which has significantly raised in the past decade. According to officials, most of these structures do not follow quake safety norms.
