HC supports Delhi Jal Board’s move to stop misuse of water

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Jal Board recently decided to cancel drinking water connections for bottled and water processing plants in the capital, after sensing a scam. DJB took the steps to save water and stop the misuse of water where private entities bottle Jal Board’s water by paying a small fee for the water board connection and then sold it at more than 100% profit.

Delhi High Court has now dismissed a challenge to the DJB decision and refused to interfere with the move. In a recent order,HC forced the owner of the cooling plant to challenge the decision of the DJB to withdraw his plea post an explanation by the Civic Agency to the court that this step would save huge amounts of water by abolishing the abuse of bottling plants.DJB also recommended the three civic bodies not to issue licenses to bottling plants for DJB water or ground water as their source.

The order issued by DJB stated that, with the growing population, DJB has been facing overall shortage of potable water and is unable to meet its demand for various reasons… in order to stop commercial use of water and make it available to consumers, DJB has approved to withdraw/cancel water connections sanctioned to bottling plants selling packaged units of water in jars bottles and glasses.
