MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court on April 9, allows Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to continue dumping solid waste at Deonar landfill site till December 31, 2019. The permission was granted by HC after the submission of application by BMC requesting to extend the time duration for dumping solid waste. The bench headed by Justices A S Oka and M S Sanklecha cleared BMC, “We make it clear that under no circumstances further time will be granted. Sufficient time has been already given to the corporation to comply with earlier orders.”

Earlier before in April 2013, the HC ordered BMC to stop dumping solid waste at Deonar and Mulund within three months. HC offered another three months period to Municipal Corporation as BMC stated that they do not have any other plant to dump the solid waste at these sites, and these sites did not comply with the Solid Waste Management Act. Even after the time duration provided by the high court BMC did not manage another plant to treat the solid waste. Till now HC continues extending the time period to close down the two dumping sites. The bench also noted of assurance given by the BMC that it would use only 70 hectares of the Deonar site to dump solid waste.
