Government of Delhi signs MoU to improve road safety

NEW DELHI: The Delhi government’s Transport Department, on Thursday, August 13, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bloomberg Philanthropies to strengthen road safety in the national capital. The initiative is joined by 30 world cities in an initiative for global road safety, said a statement from the department. Under the initiative, the Delhi government will receive support from the world’s leading road safety experts and will be technically supported to organize various periodic road user behavior surveys and training for staff, it said.

Kailash Gahlot, Transport Minister, Delhi, said through signing this MoU and joining Bloomberg Philanthropies Global Road Safety initiative, there will be a collaboration with the world’s leading organization in improving road safety. He added that the Delhi government, global safety experts and Delhiites will now work together to ensure that lives are not lost on the roads of Delhi.

The Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety will address various facets of road safety including enforcing regulations on speeding, drunken driving, wearing helmets and seat belts, and developing and constructing safer roads and transport networks. The objectives of the initiative would be to encourage safe driving and building public support for road safety through awareness campaigns and using data from high-quality monitoring and evaluation systems for policy making and planning, will be other strategies of the initiative, the statement from the transport department said.

The 30 cities including Delhi will participate in the 2020-2025 phase of the Global Road Safety initiative. The cities will get resources and support to enable them to undertake bold, ambitious road safety operations to save lives and reduce injuries from road accidents, the statement said.
