PANAJI, Goa: The Government of Goa approved an amendment to section 13 of the Goa Waste Management Act, after which the state government could provide consultancy services to other states in the waste management sector.
The new amendment will also pave the way for the Goa Waste Management Institute, which will be established in collaboration with an institute of repute or the Directorate of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship or GIPARD (Goa Institute of Public Administration and Rural Development).
Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) was established in 2016 under the Goa Waste Management Act to build facilities for the scientific disposal of various types of waste.
The proposed amendment was sent to the state law department for evaluation, and their inputs have been incorporated in the updated bill. The amendment bill will be tabled in the Goa State Legislative Assembly in the ongoing session.
Following the amendment, GWMC will begin providing waste management consulting services to local bodies, urban local bodies, government institutions, organisations, and private entities. This applies not only within the state but also outside of it, but these services will come at a cost.
GWMC has also proposed to establish a Waste Management Institute, either on the premise of a government building or any rental property. The institute’s expenses will be covered by the fees collected from the courses offered by the institute, as well as the grant-in-aid provided by the Department of Science and Technology and Waste Management.
