GURUGRAM: The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has hiked the water tariffs by 45 paise per kiloliter. The authority hiked the tariff in April 2019, but the new revised bills will be in effect from May 15, 2019. The decision was taken following a proposal of an annual increase by 5 per cent in water tariffs, as discussed in a GMDA meeting which was held in August 3, 2018.
“In the GMDA meeting, it was approved that from April 1 of every financial year water tariff will be increased by 5 per cent. Those who make online payments will get 5 per cent rebate in the total amount. This is an incentive for users to pay water bill on time,” said Lalit Arora, GMDA chief engineer.
A similar course of action was taken by the GMDA when they took over the city’s water supplies from Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) in January of 2017. The previous step of increasing the tariff to Rs 10 per kiloliter was quickly revoked after mass opposition to the tariff reform and brought down to the current Rs 9/kL.
