HYDERABAD: Despite massive drives and campaigns being organised under the Swachh Bharat Mission, a number of cities are still struggling due to huge piles of garbage on roadsides. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is planning to install CCTV cameras at various Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVP) in order to address the issue of open dumping of waste at such points and levy penalty on offenders.

Bonthu Rammohan, Mayor, Hyderabad said that despite 20,000 sanitation workers working tirelessly to clear waste, garbage is still piling up on roadsides as a number of people continue to dump waste at different places. He further said that in order to curb this, GHMC proposed to install closed-circuit (CC) cameras at GVPs to make it possible for the corporation to identify offenders and levy fines on them.

Launching the intensive cleanliness drive to improve sanitation in Gaddiannaram ward on Tuesday, November 10, the Mayor said that the objective of the drive was to keep the particular ward clean, especially filling potholes, lighting up streets, cleaning drains, clearing garbage, executing spraying and fogging operations, removing unauthorised flexes, banners, taking up civil repair works wherever needed, regular sweeping, and more. He also appealed to the citizens to cooperate with the corporation in keeping the city clean and added that the residents of the city must place garbage at designated points to enable the workers to lift garbage from one point in a housing society instead of going to every house individually which leads to loss of time and obstructs the workers from working to their full potential.
