Ghazipur landfill to grow taller than the Taj by 2020

NEW DELHI: The Ghazipur landfill site,also known as the ‘mountain of garbage’, in New Delhi is on course to rise higher than the Taj Mahal by next year.

Covering almost the areaequal to 40 football grounds, the Ghazipurlandfill is growing by nearly 10 meters annually with no end in sight to its foul-smelling growth.

According to Arun Kumar,superintendent engineer, East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC), it is already more than 65 meters (213 feet) high.

The apex court already warned the corporation last year to install red warning lights to alert passing jets.

The Ghazipursite was commissioned in 1984 and reached its saturation point in 2002. But the dumping continued andeach day hundreds of trucks carry garbage to the site.
