CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Municipal Corporation (GCMC) is planning to develop several infrastructural projects within the corporation limits. Some of them are common corridor for optic fiber, bicycle corridor, restoration of waterbodies, installation of bio gas plant etc.
S P Velumani, Minister for Municipal Administration said, the corporation will develop a common optic fiber corridor at an estimated cost of Rs 200 crore on July 8. The common optic fiber corridor will be developed via public private partnership (PPP) and will improve communication security in the city.
Velumani said, “The Chennai Corporation will develop a common optic fiber cable corridor along roads under the (PPP) mode. Six cables will connect government offices, hospitals and ward offices.”
The optic fiber corridor is expected to make tariffs cheaper for residents, and improve the optic fiber network in more than 70 per cent of the areas.
The corporation is also planning to develop a bicycle corridor at a cost of Rs 20 crore along the Buckingham Canal from Kasturba Nagar MRTS station to Thiruvanmiyur.
The civic body will also start the work of restoring 114 waterbodies in Chennai at a cost of Rs 100 crore, to supply freshwater in the city. “This includes the work on eco-restoration of the 25-acre Villivakkkam tank,” said Velumani.
Earlier, Chennai became the first city in the country to implement 100 per cent LED streetlights. Now, the civic body will commission a remote streetlight monitoring system at a cost of Rs 46.2 crore, said Velumani.
To process biodegradable waste produced daily, corporation is planning to develop a biogas plant in Kodungaiyur dump yard to process 50 tonnes of biodegradable waste.
