KOLKATA: Firhad Hakim, West Bengal Minister, will be the newly appointed Mayor of Kolkata, announced the Trinamool Congress (TMC) party on Thursday, December 23.
The TMC has named Hakim as the next Mayor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), four days after getting a landslide victory in the KMC elections. Party’s leader and Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee presided over a gathering of newly-elected TMC councilors in Kolkata on Thursday. Atin Ghosh will be Deputy Mayor, while Mala Roy, Member of Parliament, South Kolkata, would be the next Chairperson of Kolkata Municipal Corporation, according to the Trinamool Congress Party official statement.
The TMC has announced the new Mayor-in-Council, which will consist of 13 members. Debashish Kumar, Debabrata Majumder, Tarak Singh, Swapan Samaddar, Babu Baxi, Amiruddin Boby, Mitali Banerjee, Sandipan Saha, Abhijit Mukherjee, Baiswanar Chatterjee, Ram Peyari Ram, and Jiban Saha are among them, in addition to Atin.
The party also announced the appointment of a new chairman for 16 KMC councilors, nine of them are female councilors. Mamata praised the TMC’s victory in the KMC polls, stating, “Even after various forces tried to slander us, people have preserved their faith and confidence in us.”
