ERODE: The Erode district police have installed Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems in the city for the purpose of crime detection, traffic monitoring & management, keeping track of incoming and outgoing vehicles in the city.
Each system placed by the district police cost around Rs 3.5 lakh, consisting of 8 MP camera, speed radar, control system, and more. The ANPR system can store the collected data for about 45 days that can help police in checking old footages and getting clues in case of any crime.
The police have proposed to install a total of 26 systems in the city of which four have already been installed at Cauvery check-post, near Krishna Theater, Panneerselvam Park, and near a car showroom at Thindal.
S Sakthi Ganesan, Superintendent of Police, said that the system would help in recording the movement of all the vehicles in a particular location round-the-clock, reads the number plate and also records the speed of the vehicles.
When a chain-snatching incident or a hit-and-run accident occurs, the investigating officer can easily track the accused using the vehicle number and can obtain crucial evidence, the SP added.
According to Ganesan, the system will also help in monitoring crowds during public meetings and also keep a track of incoming and outgoing vehicles on busy stretches. However, traffic violators will not be booked under the system. He also said the system will be put across the district and a study would be undertaken to understand vehicle movement in order to improve the traffic management in the city.
