ERODE: In order to ensure strict enforcement of traffic law, monitoring protests and also to interact between policemen and vehicle users, 30 body worn cameras were distributed among police personnel on April 30 on a trial basis. The camera is a wireless communication set which can be fixed on either collar flap or shirt pocket and is connected directly to the command center through a sim card. The camera weighs only 150 grams and can send direct live stream video to the command center for live monitoring of events.
S Sakthi Ganesan, Superintendent of Police, Erode, distributed 30 cameras among the police force. 15 cameras to policemen doing law and order duty and 15 to the policemen monitoring traffic. The police claimed to have already trained their personnel’s about how and when to use the cameras for monitoring the ground situations during major protests and events.
Ganesan said, “The footages in the cameras would serve as a proof and can also be used as an evidence in the court and all the happenings in a particular locality will be automatically recorded in the camera and can be reviewed anytime”. The scheme of live monitoring will be implemented across whole Erode district in a week’s time, he added.
Initially, 30 policemen in Erode Town, Erode South, Erode North, Karungalpalayam, Erode Taluk and Erode Town Traffic Wing police stations were given the cameras to be used round-the-clock. About 200 more cameras will be purchased and each camera costs about Rs. 30,000.
