Rural women entrepreneurs play a crucial role in driving economic growth and fostering social development in their communities. However, limited access to resources, a lack of entrepreneurial skills, and other social barriers hinder their progress. The Girl Power Project is focusing on building self-esteem and capacity through counseling, life skills training, and mentoring support through the entire journey of self-development and growth of rural women entrepreneurs. This includes support in making decisions, capacity building, and work opportunities as well as overcoming barriers.
It focuses on market-led enterprise building, which is identifying gaps in already functioning value chains so that one knows where the maximum margins can be made to benefit the informally employed poor, create quality entrepreneurs for growing the business, laying emphasis to serve a variety of market segments and women with varying levels of capacities and social constraints.
The role of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Women Entrepreneurship Development is an important aspect in a developing country. India is a developing countries with a traditionally male dominated society. Participation of women in economic activities is important since financial independence is the bedrock of all kinds of independence for women. CSOs play a catalytic role in mobilizing the local human and physical resources and creating appropriate entrepreneurial environment and generating new opportunities.
This contribution to the microenterprise sector has led many state and central governments and other agencies to seek the support of CSOs to hasten the process of economic development.
The CSOs have a bigger role in stimulating and nurturing the spirit of entrepreneurship among women. An integrated approach is necessary for making the movement of women entrepreneurship a success.
In EU-funded Girl Power Project outreach activities, the active participation of our local CSOs was witnessed, who are continuously helping and supporting the women beneficiaries. Many CSOs are establishing direct contact with women who want to setup an enterprise and want to become a successful social entrepreneur.
Entrepreneur Support Centres (ESCs)
Recognizing the need to address these issues, Entrepreneur Support Centres (ESCs) at block level under Girl Power Project have emerged as a promising initiative by the Girl Power Project to strengthen and capacitate rural women entrepreneurs through institution building. These centres provide comprehensive support to women entrepreneurs, offering training, mentorship, access to finance, market linkages, and technology support. By building strong institutional frameworks, ESCs create sustainable mechanisms for long-term support, empowering women to overcome barriers and thrive as successful entrepreneurs. Presently, four Entrepreneur Support Centers (ESCs) have been established in Khunti, Bedo (Ranchi), Dumaka and Ichagarh blocks, Saraikela-Kharsawan District in Jharkhand with the support of CSOs. These centres are promoting outreach activities of the project aiming at women entrepreneurship.

Limited access to financial resources, lack of entrepreneurial skills and knowledge, and societal norms and prejudices are some of the barriers they encounter. The establishment of District Entrepreneur Support Centres (DESCs) aim to address these challenges and create an enabling environment for rural women entrepreneurs. DESCs recognize the potential and capabilities of women entrepreneurs and seek to provide them with the necessary tools and resources to succeed. By offering comprehensive support, DESCs empower women to overcome barriers and unlock their full potential. DESCs play a pivotal role in strengthening and capacitating rural women entrepreneurs.
Institution Building
Institution building lies at the core of the DESC approach. These centres focus on establishing strong institutional frameworks that ensure sustainable support for rural women entrepreneurs. This involves collaboration with various stakeholders, including government agencies, financial institutions, nonprofit organisations, and industry associations, to pool resources and expertise.
Training and Skill Development
DESCs offer comprehensive training programs that cover essential entrepreneurial skills and knowledge. These programs equipped women entrepreneurs with the necessary tools to start and manage their businesses effectively. The programme covered may include business planning, financial management, marketing strategies, digital literacy, and leadership skills. By enhancing women’s entrepreneurial capabilities, DESCs empower them to make informed decisions and succeed in the competitive business landscape.
Access to Finance
Lack of access to capital is a significant barrier for rural women entrepreneurs. DESCs facilitate access to finance by partnering with banks and microfinance institutions. They help women understand loan procedures, prepare loan applications, and access credit facilities. Additionally, DESCs advocate for women-friendly loan schemes and collateral-free financing options, ensuring that financial services are inclusive and tailored to the needs of women entrepreneurs.
Mentorship and Networking
DESCs recognize the importance of mentorship in the entrepreneurial journey. Through mentoring programs, experienced entrepreneurs, industry experts, and successful business leaders guide and inspire women entrepreneurs. They provide valuable insights, share experiences, and offer guidance on various aspects of business development. Furthermore, DESCs facilitate networking opportunities, allowing women entrepreneurs to connect with like-minded individuals, potential investors, and customers. .
Creating Market Linkages
One of the significant challenges faced by rural women entrepreneurs is limited access to markets. DESCs bridge this gap by facilitating market linkages. They help women entrepreneurs identify market opportunities, develop marketing strategies, and establish connections with buyers and distributors. DESCs organize trade fairs, exhibitions, and business matchmaking events, providing platforms for women to showcase their products and services to a wider audience. Through these initiatives, DESCs open doors to new markets, both domestic and international, expanding the customer base and revenue streams for women-led businesses.
