CHENNAI: A beach clean-up drive organised by the Environment Foundation of India (EFI) was joined by hundreds of volunteers of different age groups to clean up the beaches in the southern parts of Chennai on May 2.
The initiative was named ‘Planeteers 2019’, saw volunteers from corporates, colleges, schools and commoners including children taking part in the drive.
Arun Krishnamurthy, founder of EFI, said that the initiative was held to celebrate the World Environment Day, on June 5.
Nearly 5,000 volunteers cleared garbage from a stretch of more than 10 km along the Bay of Bengal covering Besant Nagar, Kottivakkam, Palavakkam, Thiruvanmiyur and Neelankarai.
According to Krishnamurthy the first clean-up drive campaign was organised in 2007, and over 300 volunteers turned up. This year the total number of volunteers who participated to remove waste from various water bodies and beaches in the city crossed 12,000.
The collected waste weighed more than seven tonnes consisted both degradable and non-degradable garbage. This was the 12th annual beach cleaning camp that was organised by the EFI.
