NEW DELHI: East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) is planning on hiring an agency for the collection and transportation of e-waste from their homes or any other place, as per their convenience. This agency will transport e-waste from various locations across East Delhi and will be responsible for further management and disposal, in accordance with the pre-defined rules.
“Residents of East Delhi will soon have access to this facility through the corporation’s website, or a mobile application, once the agency is finalised,” said Shyam Sundar Agarwal, Mayor, EDMC. India is one of the major e-waste generators in the world and waste generation has tremendously increased in the past few years. In order to ensure eco-friendly management of e-waste, the government formulated the E-Waste Management Rules 2016, Beer Singh Panwar, Chairman, EDMC, stated.
With this prospect in mind, the EDMC has invited proposals from various leading agencies that work in the field of e-waste management. East Delhi is considered to be a hub of e-waste recycling, but the work is carried out in an unorganized manner. This calls for an urgent need of setting the waste management chain in order, in compliance with relevant rules and regulations.
