NEW DELHI: The East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) recently opened its second biogas plant with 5000 kg capacity near Construction and Demolition Waste Processing Plant at Shastri Park. The biogas plant is expected to generate 500 kilowatts of electricity and 750 kg of manure, every day.
At Geeta Colony, a biogas plant of similar capacity was installed in November 2019. But it soon became non-operational due to some glitches. Shyam Sunder Agarwal, Mayor, EDMC, said that efforts are being made to make it operational again. He said that these projects are essential to reduce the burden on landfills in the city. Additionally, biogas plants are environment-friendly, supply energy for cooking, generate electricity along with high quality compost.
Beer Singh Panwar, Chairman of the Standing Committee mentioned that the new biogas plant has been constructed with cost of around Rs 1.6 crore, which was funded by the Government of India under its Urban Development Fund scheme.
