NEW DELHI: East Delhi municipal commissioner Ranbir Singh was sent on leave on October 1. EDMC called a special session of its deliberative wing for the impeachment of the commissioner over allegations that he was not putting efforts towards ending the sanitation workers’ strike. However, when the meeting began, Nirmal Jain, the leader of the House, declared that the commissioner had been transferred and, therefore, it was no longer necessary to move the impeachment motion.
“This House had adopted a resolution to regularise contractual sanitation workers, but the commissioner was not agreeing to it. But now after his transfer, there is no need for such a motion (to impeach him),” Jain said. He said that the transfer had come due to the “non-cooperative attitude” of the commissioner. Senior officials said Singh has been sent on leave pending an official transfer order, which might take some more time to come as October 2 was a holiday on the account of Gandhi Jayanti.
