DIBRUGARH, Assam: Dibrugarh in Assam has become the second city in the state to attain the status of municipal corporation following the Guwahati civic body. The new corporation consists of 22 wards. The defunct Chairman of the Dibrugarh Municipal Board (DMU), Saikat Patra, has been appointed as city mayor.

The announcement regarding the constitution of Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC) has been made by Ashok Singhal, Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs and Irrigation, Government of Assam. The town’s residents celebrated the announcement with great joy.

The decision to upgrade the DMU has been taken following a proposal of the District Commissioner on October 7, 2023, seeking to merge 22 ward areas in the proposed Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation. Later, a notification regarding the constitution of the DMC was issued on November 20, 2023, under sub-section (1) of section 3 of the Assam Municipal Corporation Act, 2022. Residents were also given the opportunity to go through the proposed plan and raise their objections, if any, under sub-section (4) of section 3.

After going through the objections received through the Dibrugarh District Commissioner, the state governor considered three claims and objections and rejected one, stating the absence of merit. Under sub-section (5) of Section 3 of the Assam Municipal Corporation Act, the Governor established DMC with assigned wards and boundary marks.
