Denmark meets almost 50% energy requirement from wind

COPENHAGEN: Denmark has set a new milestone in the renewable energy sector last year as the country sourced almost half of its electricity consumption from wind power in 2019. The record can be attributed to the country’s steep cost reductions and improvement in offshore technology. 47 per cent of the country’s energy requirement was met by the wind energy, increasing from 41 per cent in 2018 and 43 per cent in 2017. The information was revealed by country’s grid operator Energinet, who also said that 14 per cent of energy consumption across the European Union was met by wind energy in 2019. The share of the power from wind turbines themselves increased from14 per cent in 2018 to 18 per cent in 2019.

Back in October, the International Energy Agency (IEA) mentioned that while power generated from wind turbines at sea accounts for 0.3 per cent of electricity generation across the world, it will be increasing by over 15 times in the next 20 years.
