NEW DELHI: On Thursday, August 1, Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister of Delhi, announced that the residents of the national capital territory would be entitled to free electricity consumption of up to 200 units under a domestic connection. While addressing a press conference, the CM said, “People who consume up to 200 units will not have to pay their electricity bills. Their bills are waived. Further, those who consume 201-400 units of electricity will get about 50 per cent subsidy.”

The CM said that around 35 per cent of the total consumers use less than 200 units during summer. And, in winter, the percentage goes up to around 70. Terming the move “historic”, he claimed that Delhi has the cheapest electricity rate in the country.

Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC), however, has kept the energy charges same for all categories, except for those who consume more than 1,200 units per month. A household whose electricity consumption crosses 1,200 units a month will have to pay 25 paise extra per unit and will be charged Rs 8 per unit.
