NEW DELHI: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on January 30, 2019, imposed fine of Rs 5 lakh on the schools and colleges in Delhi that do not have rainwater harvesting system.
A bench of Justice Raghuvendra S Rathore and expert member S S Garbhal said that under the Directorate of Education, 929 schools and 12 colleges and 106 schools of Southern Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) would be issued notices within a week by the special director education of Delhi, director higher education and deputy director education, SDMC. These institutions would have to deposit the compensation amount with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) within two weeks.
NGT’s directions came post a plea filed by Mahesh Chandra Saxena, which said that despite the specific direction of the tribunal, the government agencies did not submit the list of the buildings with functional rainwater harvesting system.
