Delhi records increase in annual education expenditure per student

NEW DELHI: Manish Sisodia, Deputy Chief Minister, Government of NCT of Delhi, tabled the Economic Survey report during the Budget Session on Monday, March 9. According to the survey, the expenditure incurred on students annually has increased significantly from Rs 50,812 in 2016-17 to Rs 78,082 in 2020-21.

The report added that there are 1,230 government and government-aided schools in Delhi which constitute 21.61 per cent of the total schools in the region. However, the share of enrolment in government and government-aided schools is 37.18 per cent of the total enrolments of all the schools in Delhi during 2019-20.

Total expenditure on education, including sports, arts and culture, has increased from Rs 6,555 crore in 2014-15 to Rs 15,102 crore in 2020-21, the report said. The share of education in Delhi’s budget has increased from 21 per cent in 2014-15 to 23 per cent in 2020-21, it added. According to the state Budget Analysis Report of the Reserve Bank of India, the Delhi government allocates the highest amount of funds to education sector in comparison to all other states in 2020-21.
