NEW DELHI: Delhi’s peak power demand this summer is likely to exceed 7,400 MW, said a power discom on March 15, 2019.

The peak power demand last summer crossed 7,000 MW for the first time and reached 7,016 MW in July 2018. According to BSES, Delhi’s peak power demand is now substantially more than that of Mumbai and Chennai put together and also three times that of Kolkata.

The expected peak power demand of 7,400 MW is 250 per cent more than the peak demand in 2002 which was 2879 MW.

A spokesperson from the BSES said, “The BSES discoms are fully geared-up for the summer months and electricity from J&K, Manipur, Meghalaya and Sikkim to light-up Delhi homes.”

In a press release issued on March 15, 2019, BSES said that it has made adequate arrangements to meet the electricity demand of more than 42 lakh consumers, including long-term power purchase agreement (PPAs) and banking arrangements with states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Sikkim.

In the areas of BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) covering localities in south and west Delhi, the peak demand is expected to touch the 3,200 MW mark this year as against 3,081 MW last year.  The peak demand in east and central Delhi areas supplied by BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) may go up to 1,640 MW against the peak demand of 1,561 MW last year, he said.
