NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court (HC) on Tuesday, July 20, gave a nod to the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) to carry out a survey of squatters in Lajpat Nagar’s Central Market, which is marked as a no-vending zone. HC has given directions for the completion of the survey within the time frame of two weeks. Delhi Police will be assisting the two vending committees in the process, till the completion of the survey.

“The genesis of all these orders from Hon’ble Supreme Court is the bomb blast, which happened at the market. You have to see what is the focal point of all this… the fountainhead is the bomb blast which happened,” the division bench of Justice Vipin Singh and Justice Jasmeet Singh told SDMC, while mentioning the  1996 bomb blast and  a judgment declaring the area as a no-vending zone. Eviction of squatters is not easy because of them being present in large numbers. Squatters, despite the judgment, are still carrying out their ventures but this has to be controlled as early as possible
