NEW DELHI: Delhi recorded more than 17,000 COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, April 15, and became the worst-hit city in India, leaving Mumbai behind. So far, 11,163 is the peak of Mumbai in a single day which was recorded on April 4, according to the official figures. Delhi, on the other hand, recorded 17,282 fresh COVID-19 cases in a day on Wednesday which is the highest single day surge since the onset of COVID-19 pandemic.
The unprecedented surge in the cases in last few days has shocked the doctors and medical experts which has led to the conjecture that the virus has mutated and has assumed so many different strains which are more easily transmissible than others. According to the official figures, 104 new deaths were recorded taking the total toll to 11,540. Record 1.08 lakh tests were conducted in a single day on Wednesday and the positivity rate has reached the figure of 15.92 per cent, according to the official figures.
Richa Sareen, Consultant, Fortis Hospital, said that given the pace of the spread, there is definitely a different variant in circulation which is more infectious than the previous ones. She added that younger population is more at risk because elderly have mostly been vaccinated and the older population is mostly at home. Younger population is out and vulnerable which increases the chances of infection.
