NEW DELHI: The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi has decided to replug the Mukhayamantri Street Light scheme from this month, said a senior government official on Sunday, August 1. The project aims to install over 2,10,000 LED streetlights across the city.

The project was introduced in September 2019 by Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister, Delhi. However, it was halted in April 2020 due to the pandemic. According to official records, over 1,20,000 LED streetlights have been installed across 70 assembly segments in the city. Under the scheme, each of Delhi’s assembly constituencies is supposed to receive 3000 LED streetlights.

The fresh push by the government will include the installation of over 90,000 more LED lights by the end of this year. According to the government official, the lights being installed have sensors that automatically turn off in daylight. The light ranges between 20 and 40 watts and comes with a five-year guarantee.

The scheme was introduced to combat the allegations against the Capital for being unsafe for women. The government identified over 2000 dark spots in the city wherein the LED lights will be installed.

Lights will be installed outside residences that will bore the power bills of the LED streetlights. The government will then reimburse them in their monthly power bills.
