NEW DELHI: Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), a business under the direction of GMR Airports Infrastructure Limited, has installed 57 electric vehicles (EVs) at the airport and in the surrounding areas as part of its effort to reach net zero carbon emission status by 2030. As a result, the Delhi airport is now the India’s first airport to deploy EVs within the airport ecosystem.

The DIAL unveiled its innovative Green Transportation Program for World Environment Day in June, and these EVs have been put into service as a result.

The EVs would contribute to a yearly reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of about 1,000 tonnes. The DIAL has started the adoption of electric vehicles as part of the Green Transportation Programme and is phasing out all diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles. For its airside and landside activities, the DIAL has ordered 64 electric cars as part of the first phase. Of these, the DIAL has deployed 57 EVs on both the airside and the ground. Soon, seven additional EVs would be put into service.

On the airside, 21 of these EVs would be deployed and used by airside operations, airport rescue & fire fighting, and AGL teams. On the landside, the remaining 36 EVs would be used by various departments, including environment, horticulture, and freight.

The DIAL has also installed 12 charging stations and 22 charging points at the airport to facilitate the seamless adoption of electric mobility within the airport environment.
