Cycles for green mobility in Millennium City of India

GURUGRAM: A 10km long cycling corridor was inaugurated on Gandhi Jayanti in a bid to develop non-motorised transport in the city. The two-way cycling track will run from Huda City Center to Subhash Chowk. The initiative aims to further the Swachh Gurugram programme by attaining clean air with green mobility in the city.

Many such cycle tracks were developed in the past but they were all turned into parking space for street vendors and vehicles. Keeping that in mind, V S Kundu, Chief, Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has asked all GMDA officials to cycle to work all October hoping that it would help the administrators understand the problems faced by the cyclists.

The launch on Friday witnessed around 500 people from all age groups welcoming the move and cycling on the track. The inauguration comes weeks after GMDA showed interest in taking up public cycling projects. Gurugram is one of the total 95 cities in India who have registered themselves to compete with each other for the Centre’s ‘Cycles4Change’ Challenge.

Sarika Panda Bhatt, Associate director, Rahgiri Foundation, said, “To promote non-motorised transport and public transport is the need of the hour in the city.”
