KOLKATA: Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI) of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research Centre (CSIR), Durgapur, organised a training programmme on “Management of Municipal Solid Waste.” Special emphasis was laid on “Mechanised Segregation System for fresh-waste and legacy-waste” in the training session. The three-day hands-on training programme, conducted at the Institute between February 11 and 13, witnessed students from South Bihar Central University, Gaya, participating.
Under this programme, 17 students were able to get hands-on training on municipal-solid-waste-processing machines, which have been designed, developed and integrated at the CSIR-CMERI residential campus. The participants said that the programme made them aware of the environmental impact of waste, and that they learned approaches for safe and sustainable waste management, including management of construction and demolition waste, and processing of horticulture, plastic, and household waste.
The programme also highlighted the concept of circular economy by optimizing resources ‘loops’ into waste management systems. It also had participating students share their ideas and views on the implementation of the technology at the mass level and particularly in small cities. Students also received certificates of participation for the skill development programme.
Prof Hirani from the institute said that they are currently working relentlessly for science and technology and applying the basic engineering principles to make their campus a sustainable, zero waste, eco campus with the implementation of smart lighting, smart parking, bio gas, municipal solid waste management, etc.
