NEW DELHI: The death toll due to COVID-19 infection crossed mark of three million globally today. The continuously spreading infection of SARS-CoV-2, despite vaccination campaigns, have led countries like India and Germany to impose fresh lockdowns to contain the spiraling infection numbers.
According to a tally released by AFP, a global news agency, an average of over 12,000 deaths were recorded globally every day in the past week. The tally also established that on Friday, 16 April, the highest number of new COVID-19 positive cases were reported worldwide, amounting to 829,596. The daily average of 731,000 new cases were registered over the last week globally.
Richer countries that have waged mass vaccination efforts have effectively plummeted the numbers of new COVID cases. Britain has administered 60 per cent of its population with at least one vaccination dose, and now is recording around 30 deaths a day in comparison to when in January, it was recording 1200 deaths.
India recorded over 2 lakh new COVID-19 cases and 1,341 deaths as of yesterday. Furthermore, India’s capital New Delhi recorded over 19,486 new infections of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours.
