NEW DELHI: Centre government is coming up with all sorts of solution to deal with increasing pollution in Capital. Centre government has decided to cap Commercial vehicles life to 20 years from 2020. This means vehicles like buses, three-wheelers, taxis and trucks registered before 2000 have to go off the road from April 1,2020.
Private Vehicles like cars, two-wheelers are not included in this policy. This policy was approved in a meeting at Prmie Minister’s Office. The meeting was attented by NripendraMisra, principal secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, NitiAayog chief executive officer Amitabh Kant, and the finance, steel, environment, highways, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Department of Heavy Enterprises, and micro, small and medium enterprises secretaries.
According to Official, once the scheme is approved and implemented owners of vehicles older than 20 years can voluntarily scrap their vehicles and receive a discount on the purchase of a new one, as GST on new vehicles will be between 12% and 18%.
According to records at least seven lakh commercial vehicles were registered before 2000 and will be off the road in 2020. According to different researches and studies, pre-BS-I commercial vehicles emit pollutants 25 times more than the BS-IV vehicles.
“The steel ministry along with NitiAayog have been directed to draft a policy to promote establishment of recycling and shredding centres,” the first official said. Vishnu Mathur, director general of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, welcomed the plan. “We have been asking for it for a decade. It will not only help curb pollution but will improve safety on the roads. Besides, other benefits will also accrue from recycling of scrap,” he said.
