LUCKNOW, Uttar Pradesh: In order to increase the green cover in the urban areas of Uttar Pradesh, the civic bodies and various government departments have decided to plant about 35 lakh tree saplings.
Of these 35 lakh saplings, 13.80 lakh will be planted by the 17 municipal corporations in the state, while the remaining saplings will be planted by other civic bodies.
Various government departments will also be contributing to the target of planting 35 lakh trees, most of which will be planted by the Department of Forest, Rural Development, and Agriculture. Among the 17 municipal corporations, Agra Municipal Corporation will be planting the highest number of saplings (2.12 lakh) in its territorial limits.
The Uttar Pradesh government aims to plant nearly 35 crores tree saplings by 2026-27. This is being done to increase the overall green cover in the state, which is only 9 per cent, and by planting tree saplings, the state government aims to increase this to 15 per cent. To achieve the target of planting 35 crore saplings various government departments have been assigned specific targets.
