CHENNAI: Greater Chennai Corporation is going to privatize waste management in the districts of Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram and Ambattur, starting this week. The civic body will be determining the private operator via a pre-bid meeting scheduled for May 29. The operator would be responsible for the street cleaning work in the aforementioned four zones for the next three months. The decision for the appointment of private conservancy operators was made after most of the city streets were found lacking in proper sanitation by the civic body, owing to the inability of the current machinery to cover the narrow by-lanes.

“We have stopped tricycles in the new service delivery model. Battery-operated cars will collect garbage from all the streets. More than 5,000 streets will be cleaned by these vehicles which are less than 5-feet wide,” an official of the civic body said.

According to the estimates, more than four lakh households of the city would be getting the services of door-to-door collection of segregated waste.

After private conservancy operator for the four zones is decided, the Chennai Corporation is also looking forward to privatise conservancy operations in eight more zones in the city, starting with Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Perungudi and Sholinganallur in the near future.
