CHENNAI, Tamil Nadu: The Greater Chennai Municipal Corporation is mulling the plan to ask permission from the state government to penalise pet owners who haven’t registered their pets with the urban local body and obtained the necessary license for their pets.
An official informed that the civic body will request permission from the state government after the model code of conduct is lifted. In line with this, permission will also be sought from the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) — a statutory organisation that promotes the welfare of domestic animals in the country.
Earlier, a five year old girl and her mother were attacked by two pet Rottweilers at GCC Park, Nungambakkam, after which the Chennai Corporation is pursuing this penalty plan.
The provisions of the Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies Act mandate a penalty of ₹100 on unlicensed pets from their owners from 2018. Later, the penalty clause was amended to “appropriate action will be taken by the local body”.
